Thomas' MI and Data internship with Face Forward
Fun fact about yourself?
I’m one belt off a black belt in Taekwondo.
What do you study?
I study pure Maths at Bristol University.
Why did you want to do an internship?
Because I’m interested in doing data science later in life and it was a good way to get a taste of it in a work setting.
What kind of things do you do in the internship?
Day to day I will analyse data using Excel spreadsheets, write code and make graphs to help people understand the data and help with any data queries. The information I present will help advisers to improve the services for people that need them, by identifying where they can be most effective. This work is developing skills which will be super helpful when I’m applying to jobs.
What do you enjoy about the internship?
I enjoy having the freedom to spend my time doing what interests me in terms of data and applying what I’ve learnt from school and university to the job.
What has your internship taught you?
I’ve learnt how to communicate with people in a work environment clearly and effectively, which has made me better prepared for future employment.
How will the internship help you in the future?
It’s provided me with real world experience and has taught me the importance of time management and good communication, which is important for future jobs. Doing an internship will add value to my CV. Working within the charity sector is good as it might make you more appealing to future employers.
Any tips for getting the most out of your internship?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions, no one’s expecting you to know everything and you’ll learn a lot from chatting to others.
What do you want to do next?
I would love to have a job writing artificial intelligence using machine learning code (and get paid a lot).
Would you recommend an internship?
Yes definitely. It gives you valuable experience and is a great way to make some money!
