Face Forward is working with Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service to provide a ‘Safer People And Responsible Communities’ (SPARC) course for Face Forward participants within the Bournemouth and Poole areas.
Whether you’re considering firefighting as a possible career path or you’d just like to learn more about the emergency services, this could be your chance to see what it is like to be an operational firefighter!
What is the course about?
The SPARC project is an intensive five-day work experience delivered by specially trained firefighters.
Over the 5 days, you will…
- Learn firefighting skills
- Understand the consequences of anti-social or risky behaviour
- Develop team-building skills and work in a co-operative environment
- Build self-confidence and self-esteem
- Gain certification of accreditation – AQA
- Learn about fire and safety
- Improve your communications skills
- Possible career opportunity
The course will cover:
- Arson Prevention
- Ice Breakers
- Hose, ladders and pump experience
- Smoke House Search and Rescue experience
- Water rescue and High abseil (TBC) experience
Throughout the course, you’ll be responsible for the management and maintenance of the fire engine, the firefighting equipment and your own personal protective equipment (PPE), under the guidance of instructors.
Who is it for?
This opportunity is available for Face Forward participants aged between 16 to 24 in the areas of Bournemouth and Poole. We only have 12 places available, so if you’re interested, talk to your adviser ASAP!
The SPARC course will take place from Monday 14th to Friday 18th of May 2018, from 8:30 am until 4:00pm (breakfast and lunch will be provided). There will also be an introduction session on Thursday 10th May when you’ll be given your personal kit and instructors will go through some basic tasks.
The SPARC course will take place at Hamworthy Fire Station, which is a 10-minute walk from Hamworthy Train Station. If you’re thinking of driving, there’re parking spaces on the road just behind the Fire Station.
