A case of mis-sold lives?

Some years ago a High Court ruling hit several insurance companies where it really hurt because they had mis-sold pension plans. Those of us who advise and guide young people in their career options could well be described as “selling plans for life prior to pensions”. So what of those who suppress or skew such advice and guidance: could they be sued?

Jumpstarting Year 11 Students

Jumpstart projects are usually aimed at mainstream young people, but this year we decided to run one with a small group of Year 11 pupils from Sherborne Learning Centre.

As the students are used to a limited timetable their first hurdle was to agree to take part and be able to engage with the tasks. Activities were planned to ensure they were practical, short, focused and adaptable to need. These included life planning, decision making, action planning and visits.

The project was successfully delivered by professionals fworking in a multi agency team:

Alison Stones – Connexions Personal Adviser

Helen McNab – Shadows

Rachel Fraiz-brown – Area Youth Worker

Vicky –Teaching Assistant

The main focus for this Jumpstart Project was to raise aspirations, as the group felt stigmatised due to attending a Learning Centre.

NEET Result!

Amidst news of rising unemployment rates, and particular concern around the number of young people out of work, the annual figures for 16-18 year olds locally who are not in education, employment and training appear relatively stable.

The recession has been officially acknowledged and we are now registering its impact on unemployment rates – approaching 2 million across the UK(1).   The UK unemployment rate at 6.3% (1) is still lower than the European average (2).

At Ansbury – the local providers of Connexions (3) – we continue to carefully monitor the number of 16-18 year olds who are unemployed. Our focus is to ensure young people get the information, support and guidance they need to successfully move into education, employment and training at the end of compulsory schooling.   We work closely with young people before they leave school and place a high priority on engaging with young people who have left learning and are not in employment.

Figures for the 3 month period to 31 January 2009 show falls in the numbers of 16-18 year olds in Bournemouth and Poole who are not in education, employment or training (NEET).

Improving employability

Nationally, more than two-thirds of employers that recruited a 16 year old school leaver felt they were either well or very well prepared for work. However, more than a quarter thought the year 11 leavers they had recruited had been poorly prepared for work (1). How do we make sure young people acquire employability skills?

Young Carer Wins Diana Award

Connexions Adviser and Ansbury employee, Toni May, successfully nominated a North Dorset pupil for the Diana Award for her role as a young carer for her father.  Marie Cuff, who left Shaftesbury School  in the summer, was delighted to receive the Diana Award.

Toni May explains: “I met Marie for the first time about a year ago and was really moved by her description of the caring relationship she has with her father who has Parkinson’s. Mr Cuff’s condition is degenerative; he has had pioneering brain surgery and is unable to stand if it were not for the implant.”

She contacted other professionals including Louise Lakeman from Young Carers, Suzanne Beadle, Education Social Worker and Val Millichamp a Teaching Assistant at Shaftesbury to support her nomination of Marie.

Toni continued: “Although Marie was granted the award in Spring, discussions with her head teacher helped us decide that the school’s autumn awards evening was the most prestigious occasion to present it.  During this time Marie had no idea about the award, Dad and I kept it secret so it would be a surprise”.

Marie’s dad was overwhelmed to see his daughter gain the award, “I feel very proud and moved to be here”.

The award was presented by Chris Ruddick, a former award winner, who spoke about the work of Diana, Princess of Wales and what the Diana Award represents to the young people who have won it.<
